Language Point is Sunderland's Interpretation and Translation Service. Run by the City Council, it is based at its Social Services Directorate.

Its objective is to provide a high-quality, impartial and professional language support to organisations and agencies who have clients with limited command of English language. By doing so Language Point facilitates the clients' equal access to public services.

Interpretation and translation services are delivered by a pool of sessional workforce. All staff undergo a strict selection procedure and are trained to work effectively in a wide range of public sector organisations. Their development is continuous and needs-based. Professionals are encouraged to take part in the identification, design and delivery of training modules.

Language Point require a simple and user-friendly procedure to be followed when booking an interpreter or a translator. This procedure is explained in the Guidelines. (368kb)A charge will be made for this service.

Language Line


The Sunderland office of NERS offers an interpreting and translating service, and is a specialised provider of professional language services for asylum seekers and refugees in the North East of England. The service covers asylum seekers and refugee’s rights, including Immigration, Health, Social Services and the NASS system, but constantly expand training modules to incorporate other areas of work.
